The 2026 World Cup, the first edition with 48 teams and jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, promises to be the most competitive and unpredictable tournament in history. With play set to begin Thursday, June 11th, these rankings are based on current form, FIFA standings, recent history, squad depth, tactics and betting odds.
Top 1-5: The Absolute Favorites
1. France
Sitting third in the FIFA rankings, Didier Deschamps arrives for what may be his final tournament as national team coach. The squad is among the deepest in the competition. Kylian Mbappé leads the attack alongside Ousmane Dembélé, Marcus Thuram and a group of emerging talents including Désiré Doué, Rayan Cherki and Michael Olise. The midfield is anchored by Aurélien Tchouaméni, Warren Zaïre-Emery and N'Golo Kanté, while the back line featuring William Saliba, Dayot Upamecano, Jules Koundé and Theo Hernández is among the most reliable in the field. Occasional defensive lapses remain a concern, but the individual quality throughout the roster makes France dangerous in every phase. If Deschamps finds the right balance between structure and attacking freedom, this group has every opportunity to etch its name in history and send their coach out as a legend.
2. Spain
Champions of Euro 2024 through dominant possession and sharp transitions, Luis de la Fuente's side enters as arguably the most complete team in world football. Lamine Yamal, Pedri and Nico Williams bring creativity and pace in the final third, while experienced heads around them provide maturity. The midfield remains Spain's greatest strength, and convincing wins against top nations in the buildup have only reinforced their standing.
3. Argentina
The defending champions arrive with Lionel Messi, who may be making his final World Cup appearance, still at the center of everything. Julián Álvarez, Lautaro Martínez and Enzo Fernández form a dependable core, and Argentina's knockout-stage experience is unmatched in the current field. The one legitimate question mark is the age of several key contributors, which could become a factor deep into the tournament.
4. Portugal
Cristiano Ronaldo arrives highly motivated for what is likely his last shot at the one major trophy missing from his career. Bruno Fernandes is playing some of the best football of his life, Vitinha and João Neves give the midfield composure and range, and the defensive unit built around Rúben Dias, Nuno Mendes and João Cancelo is well-organized and experienced. Portugal has the discipline and individual quality to trouble anyone they face.
5. Brazil
A squad in transition, yet still built around players capable of deciding any match. Vinícius Jr., Raphinha and Bruno Guimarães are among the most dangerous attackers in the tournament, and a group of younger talents adds further depth. Neymar returns to the fold while managing his way back from injury, bringing leadership even if his minutes may be managed carefully. Carlo Ancelotti takes charge with a mandate to restore Brazil's attacking identity. The five-time champions carry considerable pedigree into every World Cup, though recent inconsistency leaves them a step behind the leading European sides in this ranking.
Top 6-10: Strong Contenders
6. England
Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice give England one of the most expensive and talented teams in the tournament. The absences of Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Harry Maguire and Trent Alexander-Arnold are notable, yet the overall depth remains strong. Thomas Tuchel's side reached the Euro 2024 final and has since sharpened its intensity, though a tendency toward caution in high-stakes matches has not entirely disappeared. Strong support across North American venues could prove an advantage on the road to the final.
7. Germany
Two consecutive group-stage exits at recent World Cups have sharpened the hunger inside Julian Nagelsmann's rebuilt squad. Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz and Kai Havertz give the attack creativity and dynamism, while Manuel Neuer and Joshua Kimmich provide the kind of leadership that younger players rely on in pressure situations. The target is at minimum a semifinal berth. A stable defensive performance combined with the attacking quality available would make Germany a genuine threat to go further and revisit the heights of 2014.
8. Colombia
Runners-up at the 2024 Copa América, Colombia arrives with a well-balanced and motivated group. James Rodríguez and David Ospina bring veteran presence, while Luis Díaz, one of the standout players in European club football this season, and Richard Ríos give the side genuine skill in the positions that matter most. Colombia has the technical ability and tactical discipline to eliminate higher-ranked opponents on any given day.
9. Belgium
The so-called Golden Generation has thinned, but this is still a side capable of causing problems in the knockout rounds. Rudi Garcia has built a group that pairs veterans Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku and Thibaut Courtois with younger contributors like Jeremy Doku, Amadou Onana and Zeno Debast. Drawn in Group G alongside Egypt, Iran and New Zealand, Belgium should advance without difficulty and set their sights on the quarterfinals. For several members, this will be their last World Cup.
10. Senegal
Senegal enters the tournament as one of Africa's strongest and most consistent sides. The Lions of Teranga qualified undefeated and feature a roster loaded with talent from Europe's top leagues, including Sadio Mané, Kalidou Koulibaly, Edouard Mendy, Ismaila Sarr, Pape Matar Sarr and Nicolas Jackson. While Morocco garnered more attention after its 2022 semifinal run, Senegal has quietly been one of the continent's most reliable programs for years. Defensively organized and battle-tested on the international stage, they advanced from the group stage in 2022. Few teams outside the traditional powers bring a better combination of talent, experience, and tournament pedigree.
