The NBA’s long regular season is finally in the rearview, giving way to a playoff bracket loaded with fresh matchups, starting in the Eastern Conference. This year’s first round stands out, with every series offering a legitimate storyline worth following. However it plays out, the opening slate should deliver a strong mix of drama, adjustments, and entertaining basketball.
(1) Detroit Pistons vs. (8) Orlando Magic
First up, the top-seeded Pistons draw the Orlando Magic, who handled the Charlotte Hornets in the Play-In Tournament to secure the No. 8 seed. Detroit enters the series anchored by the league’s best defense and led by superstar Cade Cunningham, a lock for an All-NBA First or Second Team selection. Orlando, meanwhile, arrives after a solid but underwhelming 45–37 regular season that never fully met expectations.
From a matchup standpoint, this sets up well for Detroit. Orlando’s offense can stall for long stretches, and that plays directly into the Pistons’ strength as a team that consistently turns poor offensive possessions into transition opportunities. On the other end, Cunningham is clearly the best player in the series and averaged over 30 points per game against Orlando during the regular season, a level of production that feels sustainable in this matchup.
Simply put, it’s difficult to see Orlando generating enough consistent offense to win four games, and there’s no clear solution for slowing Cunningham over a full series.
The Pick: Pistons in 5
(4) Cleveland Cavaliers vs. (5) Toronto Raptors
Next is the 4-5 matchup between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Toronto Raptors, a series defined by contrasting styles. Cleveland stumbled early with injuries and uneven play, but the season turned after the addition of James Harden. Since the move, the Cavs have gone 19–7 and developed into one of the league’s more efficient offensive groups.
Toronto, on the other hand, enters as one of the postseason’s bigger surprises after a 45–37 campaign. The Raptors have leaned on a top-five defense to get here, consistently disrupting opponents and controlling tempo.
This brings a familiar dynamic: strong offense versus impressive defense. The key question is which identity holds up over a seven-game series. The edge here goes to Cleveland. The Cavs have enough defensively to limit a Toronto offense that struggles from beyond the arc, which also happens to be Cleveland’s primary vulnerability.
If the Raptors get hot from three, that could shift the equation and extend the series. But, Cleveland should be able to generate enough offense behind Harden and Donovan Mitchell, while maintaining a physical advantage inside with Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen.
The Pick: Cavaliers in 5
(3) New York Knicks vs. (6) Atlanta Hawks
The 3–6 matchup features the New York Knicks against a surging Atlanta Hawks team. The Knicks began the season as one of the favorites in the East and have largely met those expectations, even if landing as the three seed seems disappointing to fans. New York brings balance on both ends of the floor and have the best player in the series in Jalen Brunson.
Atlanta, meanwhile, comes in red hot, winning 19 of its last 25 games behind the emergence of likely Most Improved Player Nickeil Alexander-Walker and the continued rise of Jalen Johnson.
This has the makings of the most competitive series in the conference. Atlanta’s perimeter defenders give them a chance to make Brunson work, while New York has the wing depth to match up with Alexander-Walker and Johnson.
In the end, the lean is toward New York. The Knicks have been the more consistent team over the full season and carry a clear edge in postseason experience.
The Pick: Knicks in 6
(2) Boston Celtics vs. (7) Philadelphia 76ers
The final matchup features the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers, another chapter in a familiar Eastern Conference rivalry. Boston comes into the postseason fully healthy and positioned for another deep run, while Philadelphia arrives with questions, most notably the status of Joel Embiid.
On paper, this leans heavily toward Boston. The Celtics hold advantages across the board, from roster depth to defensive consistency and overall offensive efficiency.
Philadelphia’s path is narrower. It likely requires Tyrese Maxey playing at an elite level and Embiid returning at or near full strength at some point in the series.
The Pick: Celtics in 4
