Casemiro at Inter Miami: Reunion With Messi Begins a New MLS Chapter

One of the most successful midfielders of his generation, Casemiro is preparing for a new chapter in the United States. At 34, the Brazilian is set to join Inter Miami, and Lionel Messi, on a three-year deal that promises to shake up Major League Soccer.

The move is more than a change of scenery. It reunites two icons who spent years facing each other at club and international level, now joining forces in pursuit of another title in South Florida.

Casemiro announced in January that he would leave Manchester United when his contract expires on June 30, 2026. Across four seasons in England, he won the League Cup and FA Cup, then delivered a standout campaign last year with nine goals in 33 games while helping United secure a Champions League place.

Rather than accept offers from European clubs, including Inter Milan and Juventus, or move to Saudi Arabia, Casemiro chose a different path. Quality of life, family stability, a competitive setup, and a less demanding schedule all factored into the decision.

Inter Miami has emerged as the ideal landing spot. The reigning MLS Cup champions are in the middle of a reset despite sitting fourth with 28 points from 14 games. Javier Mascherano has departed, and the squad also suffered an early exit from the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Adding Casemiro to a group featuring Messi, Luis Suárez, Rodrigo De Paul, and Germán Berterame strengthens David Beckham’s ambitious project. The former Real Madrid anchor is expected to arrive as a free agent during the secondary transfer window, which runs from July 13 to September 2, giving Miami a significant midfield boost for the final stretch.

Regulatory Challenges in MLS

The move is not simple. Inter Miami does not currently have an available Designated Player spot, with Messi, De Paul, and Berterame occupying those slots.

Casemiro is expected to initially sign for a salary below $2 million, with a possible DP upgrade later, similar to Jordi Alba’s path. There is another layer too: LA Galaxy holds his discovery rights, an MLS mechanism that gives a club negotiation priority.

The Galaxy spoke with Casemiro several times and made multiple offers, but Miami became his preferred destination because of the city, the project, and the opportunity to play alongside Messi.

Inter Miami and LA Galaxy are expected to settle the matter, potentially through General Allocation Money compensation, as happened with Marco Reus. Sources indicate that although the deal may push against the spirit of MLS roster rules, an agreement is likely because Miami remains Casemiro’s top choice.

A Successful Career and Lasting Legacy

Born in São José dos Campos, Casemiro built a brilliant career from São Paulo to Real Madrid. In Spain, he formed a dominant midfield trio with Luka Modric and Toni Kroos, winning five Champions League titles, three La Liga crowns, and several other trophies.

He joined Manchester United in 2022 for a major fee and became a key figure in midfield. For Brazil, Casemiro has 84 caps and will compete in his third World Cup in 2026 across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. He will report to Granja Comary for training, with friendlies against Panama and Egypt before Brazil’s opener against Morocco.

Choosing Miami reflects a mature stage for Casemiro. He is clearly seeking balance and competitiveness without the wear and tear of European football. Plus he gets the rare chance to team up with Messi, whom he has faced close to 20 times in total.

“Playing with him would be incredible,” Casemiro has said in past interviews.

For Inter Miami, this is more than a high-profile signing. He brings experience, leadership, winning habits, and the ability to dictate the rhythm of a midfield.

Impact on the Team and the League

Casemiro’s arrival raises the bar for Inter Miami. With Sergio Busquets retired, the team needed another defensive midfielder with a strong European résumé. Now, Guillermo Hoyos will have an elite option available around the World Cup break.

For MLS, the signing reinforces the league’s appeal to stars nearing the end of their European careers or entering a different phase. Messi, Suárez, and others helped pave that road, and Casemiro now follows it.

He leaves United as an icon, with the English club honoring his dedication. In Miami, he will find a familiar environment for Brazilians, a climate similar to home, and a high-level professional structure. The three-year deal gives him security through age 37, with room for either a farewell or a possible extension.

This transfer captures the globalization of soccer. A European champion joins the greatest player in history in a league that keeps growing. For fans, it offers the chance to see two giants side by side, no longer as rivals, but as teammates.

The deal still depends on bureaucratic details and an agreement with the Galaxy, but all signs point in one direction: Casemiro is heading to Inter Miami.

It marks the end of an era in Europe and the beginning of a new partnership in MLS.
