NFL Schedule Release: Most Intriguing Week 1 Matchups

Week 1 of the NFL schedule is something every football fan excitedly waits for. No matter where your team expects to finish, there’s hope and intrigue for the opener. Even bad teams can show off some young talent, giving fans a reason to dream for a brighter future.

But some games are simply more anticipated than others. When playoff teams from last season meet in the opener, the rest of the league notices. When a marquee division matchup takes place early, it makes a big difference to both teams.

The NFL has produced a decent number of interesting matchups for Week 1, but these games really jump off the page.

New England Patriots at Seattle Seahawks

This will be the NFL’s fourth straight season with a Super Bowl rematch. But this is the first time since 2023 that scheduling the rematch in Week 1 has been an option.

The league has had the defending champion open at home ever since 2003, which meant Week 1 rematches weren’t possible the past two years. Last year, Philadelphia was scheduled to travel to Kansas City after beating the Chiefs to win the title, and the previous year, defending champ Kansas City had to go to San Francisco.

There’s a lot of controversy surrounding New England. Mike Vrabel made all the wrong headlines for his behavior with Dianna Russini, and the Patriots’ 14-3 campaign is still viewed by many as a product of luck and a favorable slate of opponents.  Putting up a stronger fight against Seattle than it did in the Super Bowl would go a long way toward undoing the latter narrative.

Buffalo Bills at Houston Texans

Is the Bills’ championship window still open? Buffalo once again came up short in the postseason, even without Patrick Mahomes around to torture the Bills’ defense. Josh Allen is still only 29, but Buffalo’s now got to deal with new powers rising in the AFC beyond the Chiefs.

That includes the Texans, who have made three straight trips to the playoffs and beat the Bills last season. Houston has the defense needed to make a Super Bowl run, but CJ Stroud has to prove he’s on the level of the AFC’s top quarterbacks. So far, Stroud has been way too inconsistent against the league’s better defenses.

That included last year’s playoff loss to New England, where Stroud never got anything going. This is a chance for him to show he’s improved and ready to take the next step.

New Orleans Saints at Detroit Lions

Last year, the Saints started the year 2-10 and seemed to be an afterthought. But New Orleans won four of its last five and believes it has found its quarterback in Tyler Shough.

Facing Detroit offers a true measuring stick for the Saints. The Lions are still a talented team, even though they didn’t make the playoffs in 2025. Most experts expect a bounce-back for Detroit, while New Orleans is more of a question mark.

With the Lions looking to make a statement, there’s no pressure on New Orleans. That can work to the Saints’ advantage; a win or a close loss would serve as notification that New Orleans is back in business.

San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams

This one offers plenty of intrigue too, and it goes beyond the NFL’s first-ever journey into Australia. This is a division rivalry, and the way these two teams finished last season show how important these games can be. The 49ers and Rams both got caught chasing the Seahawks, and starting the year with a divisional loss makes claiming the NFC West title much harder.

Another layer here is how prepared these teams will be after the travel. NFL teams have gotten used to crossing oceans, but there’s a big difference between going to London and going to Melbourne. It’s an extra 2,500 miles from Los Angeles to Melbourne than to London, and that could matter. September is near the end of winter in Australia, which means temperatures likely close to the 50s. That’s an adjustment for the body at that time of year, which may affect how things unfold.

Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs

Was last year a one-year aberration for the Chiefs, or the beginning of the end? Kansas City fell apart, going 6-11 and missing the playoffs. Meanwhile, Denver rolled to a 14-3 record and made the AFC title game. If not for an injury to Bo Nix, the Broncos might well have met the Seahawks for the title.

This matchup should tell us a lot about whether the AFC West hierarchy has shifted. Last season showed Kansas City no longer has a free run to the division crown. Both the Broncos and Chargers now look like legitimate contenders, so the spotlight falls squarely on the Chiefs and whether they still belong in that tier.

Mahomes’ health only adds to the storylines. He tore his ACL last season but expects to be ready for Week 1. If he is, this suddenly becomes one of the most important opening-week games on the docket.
